CodeSlinger by Semantic Technologies Group
CodeSlinger is a desktop application that was developed to aid medical professionals in the intertranslation, exploration and use of biomedical coding schemes.  The application was designed to provide a highly intuitive, easy-to use interface that simplifies a complex business problem: a set of time-consuming, laborious tasks that were regularly performed by a group of medical professionals involving manually searching coding books, searching the Internet, and checking documentation references.  The interface allows the exploration of complex conceptual relationships across multiple coding schemes.

Hardware Requirements:
For SQL Server Express:

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Server Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Computer with Intel or compatible Pentium III 500 MHz or faster processor (1 GHz or faster is recommended)
  • Minimum 512 MB of RAM (1 GB or more is recommended)
  • 600 MB of available hard disk space

For UMLS Metamorphosys:

  • A MINIMUM of 20 GB of free hard disc space
  • A MINIMUM of 2 GB of RAM, preferably more. Smaller memory size will cause virtual memory paging with exponentially increased processing time.
  • A CPU speed of at least 2 GHz for reasonable installation times

If these conditions are met, then the CodeSlinger server instance should run reasonably well. The process will load the terminologies into RAM, and thus occupy as much space as available on the server required to load the vocabularies. This typically is about 600-800 MB of physical RAM for a standard installation of 5-6 medium sized terminology sources.

License Requirements for UMLS Sources
It is the responsibility of the user of this software to obtain and conform to the proper license requirements as set forth by the National Library of Medicine for use of sources and terminologies found within the UMLS Metathesaurus. For more information, please see the UMLS website.

Performance Considerations
Building the CodeSlinger database (after the UMLS extraction) is a time intensive process. We provide some performance metrics for your consideration. You may want to start with a small source to get a feel for how your system will perform.
